Women's Mules

Women's mules are closed at the front and open at the heel: you slip into them without bending down and are out of them again just as quickly. At Hollert German Leather, the mule is designed as a house shoe with a soft lining; if you are looking specifically for a fleece lining, take a look at our sheepskin mules.

The open heel lets air reach your foot, while the lining wraps around the toes and the ball of the foot. That makes the mule a house shoe for well-heated rooms, for quick changes between bathroom, kitchen and desk, and for anyone who would rather do without laces or hook-and-loop fastenings at home. Depending on the model, the mules are carefully made by hand.

Mules for women: the backless house shoe

Few shoe styles are as straightforward as the mule. It has no back, no fastening and no laces; your foot slides in from behind and is held by the front part alone. This makes women's mules the shoe for the many short trips of the day: to the first coffee, to the front door when the bell rings, from desk to kitchen and back. At Hollert German Leather, the mule is designed as a house shoe, with a lining that keeps the front of your foot warm.

Mule, backless slipper or house shoe?

The terms overlap. Each means a shoe without a back: mule is the fashion term, backless slipper says what it is, and for indoor wear you will often come across house mules. What sets the mule apart from a closed slipper is the open heel. Which style suits you better depends mainly on your home: in well-heated rooms and on warm floors the open shape feels pleasantly airy, while on cold tiles a closed shoe has the advantage. For classic slippers, slipper boots and other styles, see our page for women's slippers.

Getting the fit right

Because there is no back, the front part alone keeps the mule on your foot. It should wrap gently around your toes and the ball of the foot without pinching and leave enough room at the front. Your heel rests on the sole and ends roughly at its rear edge. A fleece lining gives a little in the first days and moulds to your foot, so a new mule can fit on the snug side at first rather than too loosely. If you prefer warmth all around the foot, choose closed styles from our women's sheepskin slippers.

Style and care

A mule looks neat with linen trousers, a knitted dress or pyjamas without seeming stiff, and it comes off in a moment when you put your feet up on the sofa. In calm, muted colours it blends into almost any interior. The fleece needs little attention: air it after wearing, brush it now and then in the direction of the pile and protect it from moisture. Detailed advice can be found in our guide how to clean and care for sheepskin. Fleece-lined slippers for women and men are gathered under sheepskin slippers.
