Suede shoes for men: velvety looks, soft steps
Suede is one of the most characterful materials in a man's wardrobe. Its finely napped, matt surface reads more relaxed than smooth leather and at the same time more refined than any fabric shoe. At Hollert German Leather, men's suede shoes have an upper of fine calf suede and a lining of soft calf leather – a combination you feel with every step.
Suede, nubuck, smooth leather – what is the difference?
All three come from the same hide but are finished differently. Smooth leather shows the closed grain side, takes polish and looks formal. Nubuck is very lightly sanded on the grain side and has a very short nap. Suede is buffed from the flesh side and therefore carries the characteristic velvety, slightly longer nap that shifts lighter or darker with the angle of the light. Calf suede is the refined version of the material: dense, supple and evenly napped.

Caring for suede properly
Unlike smooth leather, suede takes no shoe cream: it would mat the nap. Brushing regularly with a soft crepe brush keeps it upright instead, and a protector guards against damp and stains – ideally applied before the shoes are first worn. Shoes that have got wet should dry slowly at room temperature, with shoe trees holding their shape. Then the natural material keeps its velvety texture for many years.
