Natural hides for your home – from sheepskin to reindeer hide
Natural hides are among the oldest and at the same time most timeless home accessories there are. Hollert German Leather carries a hand-picked selection of decorative and natural hides – natural products whose shape, colouring and markings differ from hide to hide.
Types of hide and where they come from
Each type of hide has a character of its own. Tibetan sheepskins carry long, curly hair with a natural sheen and look soft and homely, while Gotland sheepskins from Sweden show a pronounced curl in a cool grey. Cowhides from South America have short, velvety, glossy hair and lively natural markings – they set the strongest graphic accent in a room. Reindeer hides from Finland, by contrast, stand for Nordic calm: dense, full-bodied and with hollow hairs that insulate particularly well. Every interior style finds its match – from a quiet natural tone to a high-contrast pattern.
Which hide suits which spot?
Decorative hides are remarkably versatile: as a throw over the sofa and the armchair, as a seat pad on hard chairs, as a soft hide beside the bed or as a piece on the wall. For areas with a lot of foot traffic, short-haired, hard-wearing hides work better than long-haired ones, which can mat over time. If you are looking for a hard-wearing hide specifically for the floor, our hide rugs are the place to look; more ideas made from natural materials are gathered in our home decor overview.
A natural product means a one-off
Because a hide has grown naturally, what you receive is always a single piece: size, markings and colour gradient vary from hide to hide – and that is exactly what makes a real natural hide appealing. Small irregularities in the coat or the outline are not a defect but proof that nothing here has been industrially levelled out. Many hides are also sorted by hand before they go on sale.
Care: uncomplicated in everyday use
Careful vacuuming on a low setting and regular shaking keep the hides fresh and full; direct sunlight and dry heated air, on the other hand, do them no good. Reindeer hides are purely decorative: they take neither heavy use nor direct heat sources such as a radiator or an open fire. Advice specifically for sheepskin is in our guide cleaning and caring for sheepskin.
