Sheepskin as a decorative hide – natural hides with character

Anyone looking to buy a sheepskin rug wants more than a home accessory: a real hide brings warmth, texture and a piece of nature into the room. That is why Hollert German Leather selects its decorative hides with care – as premium natural products that give pleasure for many years.

Tibetan lambskin: long curls, light leather

The original Tibetan hides are sorted by hand and expertly cut to shape. Their particularly soft, curly wool with its natural sheen invites you to touch it, while the light leather keeps the hides pleasantly flexible. Because the crimped hairs trap a great deal of air, sheepskin regulates temperature: it insulates against the cold and absorbs moisture instead of letting it build up. The palette stays close to nature – from pale, creamy tones through warm brown to clear accent colours. The hides come in a range of formats, from a handy seat size to a generous floor hide.

Gotland sheepskin from Sweden

Alongside them sit Gotland sheepskins from Sweden – strictly speaking not lambskin but the fleece of a full-grown sheep, with a pronounced, long curl in a natural grey. The breed is known for its even, silvery, lustrous fleece. In a room such a hide looks cooler and more graphic than a pale lambskin, which makes it a good match for Scandinavian interiors.

How a hide works in a room

Draped over the sofa and the armchair, laid on a chair or a bench, or used as a soft runner beside the bed – a hide looks good almost anywhere. It breaks up hard edges and smooth surfaces, takes the echo out of a room and makes a cool floor comfortable underfoot. Because the leather stays light and flexible, a hide is easy to move and re-drape. Is sheepskin washable?

The honest answer: not every hide is. Ecologically tanned hides in particular must not go in the washing machine – with them, shaking them out regularly, vacuuming gently and airing them is all it takes to keep the wool looking good.
