Wool owes its warmth to the crimp of the fibre: air is held between the waves, and that trapped air is what insulates. At the same time the fibre absorbs moisture into its core without feeling damp, which is why a wool coat still feels comfortable when you step from the frost into a heated room. Cashmere comes from the fine undercoat of the cashmere goat; its individual fibres are much finer than sheep's wool, so a share of it makes a fabric softer and lighter. Alpaca is partly hollow inside, insulates accordingly well and still stays feather-light. Depending on the style you will find pure wool or blends of wool with cashmere or alpaca.
